DevOps is a concept that keeps many in the software quality market occupied. But what is it? Is it simply a continuation of CI/CD: ‘automate everything’? Or is it something about team composition, pairing, and mobbing? Or, like Scrum, is it something that each organization shapes according to its own values and beliefs? Is DevOps actually just Scrum 2.0?

We can answer all these questions with a resounding ‘yes’. But it’s only when everything is ‘yes’ that DevOps can be implemented effectively. DevOps is about Culture, Automation, Lean agile processes, Measuring, learning, and improving, and Sharing knowledge; in short, CALMS.

For every tester working within modern development models like Agile or DevOps, this has consequences. The tester is no longer just a Test Engineer; the role is increasingly shifting towards that of a Quality Engineer: the team member who ensures that we maintain and improve quality in Product, Process, and People. Starting from Business Analysis, through development and TDD, CI/CD, BDD, and ATDD, to Business Value testing and asking, “how does this benefit the customer?”

This is a new development that requires a ‘recalibration’ of our position. What is it, and who am I in this world? What does it mean for me?
